Former firehouse transformed into loft living
By Susan Voyles • svoyles@rgj.com • August 28, 2009

When Kelly Rae and Pam Haberman first stepped foot into the old firehouse on Morrill Avenue, it was filled with rotting food, human waste and several hundred vodka bottles left by squatters.

But the Reno developers saw that the building had class, and is one of only three Streamline Moderne deco buildings in Reno, characterized by its curved office corner.

"Our heads are into ugly old dead buildings and bringing them back to life," Rae said."And this building is doing jumping jacks," Haberman said, as a truck pulled up bringing in another load of furniture for a tenant.

Eyesore ‘bug building’ set for lofts, retail renovation
Pat Patera, 4/6/2009

The Firehouse 495 renovation crew includes Ken Bartlett of Bartlett Architecture along with Darin Murphy of MB Construction, working with local plumbers and electricians.

The building, says Rae, needs a new electrical system, sprinkler system, heating ducts and working mechanicals. Plus new plumbing for nine kitchens and baths — and the coffee shop. The work requires the drilling of 100 four-inch holes for venting and piping. And the utilities will get some respect — the silvery spider web of conduit will be exposed to keep the industrial feel, as seen in loft projects in the major metro areas.

Rae returned to her hometown after a career as an agent with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration turned developer. The first project, built in 2001, was modest: A duplex on West First Street, subsequently copied on Wheeler Street. But after building the Eight on Center condo project, Rae says, “I wanted to do an old building.”

Party at the Firehouse

11 @ the Firehouse

On March 6th, Bartlett Architecture, HabeRae Investments and Salon 7 hosted a pre-construction party at the Firehouse in Reno, NV to show off the new design for the Firehouse. Why wait until construction is complete? Get community involvement and show what the new design is going to look like before construction commences. We had the mayor and various other city officials along with future residents mix it up at this event. Artists from around the area including myself displayed their work and refreshments were donated from local vendors like Buckbean Brewery . It was a great time had by all.
