Joseph Residence

Residential Architecture
As the Josephs approach the main entrance of the house, the structure’s massing alludes to hierarchies within the interior spaces. They receive a preview of second story elements such as irregular window openings and wall features that are critical to the design intent of the second story observation deck.
Upon entering the residence, natural light floods into the foyer from two sets of opposing atrium windows and over a series of exposed wooden beams. As the Josephs stand in the foyer their eyes are drawn to the main living space focused around a free form adobe fire place. Light leaks into the open space from windows placed above the kitchen area. They walk further into the living room and turn toward a set of spiral stairs in the corner. Glimpses of the surrounding valley are seen through the irregular windows lining the staircase as they climb to the upper platform giving them snapshots of a 180 degree view of their original approach, where their journey started.
Once atop the spiral staircase and inside the second story solarium, the Josephs are presented with a framed view of the valley from a cozy seating area. From the exterior observation deck the Joseph's view is directed forward toward the valley beyond.
